Welcome to Black Hole's Firewall project.

We're working on a fork of the Mandrake (now Mandriva) Multi-Network Firewall, aka MNF. Our starting point is the MNF2 currently being distributed. For all of its life, the original MNF was freely available in an ISO from Mandrake. After much feedback from the mailing list, and the departure of the lead firewall engineer from Mandrake, Mandriva took the project, fixed some bugs, and released the MNF2 as a commercial product, without making a free ISO available.

Because most of the code in the MNF2 is covered by the GPL or other free software licensing, this project exists to make the features in the MNF available to people who liked the original MNF, but need the features and updates in the MNF2. As an initial step, we plan to make an ISO available, based on Mandriva LE-2005, with the MNF2 packages.

Once we have a working ISO, we plan to add features and make it into its own unique firewall, with its own strengths. Meanwhile, from here, check out:

  • Firewall Comparison Table. This page provides a table listing the features in various free firewall projects, along with the licensing terms, technology, and strengths of each. Feel free to add to this list, or improve the accuracy of our assessments here.
  • Current Installation. The MNF2 can currently be built on top of a standard Mandriva 10.0 or 10.1 installation, using the packages from Mandriva's CVS repository. This page contains the steps involved in doing so, and will be updated with steps to install from our ISO when it's available.
